Therapy Modality
EMDR Therapy
Experience transformative healing through EMDR, a powerful evidence-based therapy that helps your brain naturally process and integrate traumatic memories.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective psychotherapy approach that helps people heal from trauma and other distressing life experiences. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR has since become one of the most researched and validated treatments for PTSD and trauma.
EMDR works by stimulating both sides of the brain through bilateral stimulation—typically eye movements—while you briefly focus on traumatic memories. This process appears to unlock the brain's natural healing mechanisms, allowing memories to be processed and integrated in a way that reduces their emotional charge.
At Eden Vale, our EMDR-trained therapists integrate this powerful modality into comprehensive treatment programs. Whether you're addressing specific traumatic events, complex developmental trauma, or the distressing memories underlying addiction, EMDR can accelerate your healing journey.
Our Treatment Approach
Evidence-based therapies combined with luxury amenities for comprehensive healing
Bilateral Stimulation
Eye movements, taps, or auditory tones that activate both brain hemispheres, facilitating memory processing.
Memory Reprocessing
Targeted work on specific memories, reducing their emotional intensity and replacing negative beliefs.
Adaptive Resolution
Helping the brain file traumatic memories properly, so they no longer trigger present-day distress.
Resource Building
Developing internal strengths and positive experiences that support processing difficult material.
Safe Processing
Careful protocols ensure you never become overwhelmed, maintaining control throughout the process.
Rapid Results
EMDR often produces significant change faster than traditional talk therapy, especially for single-incident trauma.
How EMDR Works
When we experience trauma, the brain's normal information processing can become disrupted. Traumatic memories get stored in a "raw," unprocessed form, complete with the vivid images, sounds, thoughts, and emotions from the original event. When something triggers these memories, we can experience the past as if it's happening now—flashbacks, intense emotions, physical sensations. EMDR appears to tap into the brain's natural healing system. During REM sleep, our brains process the day's experiences through rapid eye movements. EMDR mimics this process while awake, focusing on specific memories. During EMDR, you'll briefly focus on a traumatic memory while following your therapist's fingers with your eyes (or receiving other bilateral stimulation). Sets of these movements are interspersed with conversation about what you're experiencing. Most people notice the memory becoming less vivid and less emotionally charged. The memory isn't erased—it's transformed. It becomes a normal memory you can recall without distress, filed in the past where it belongs rather than constantly intruding into the present.
What EMDR Can Treat
EMDR is most famous for treating PTSD, but its applications extend much further: • Single-incident trauma: Accidents, assaults, natural disasters, witnessing violence • Complex trauma: Childhood abuse, neglect, attachment disruptions • Grief and loss: Complicated bereavement, sudden or traumatic loss • Phobias: Specific fears often rooted in past experiences • Anxiety: Including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and performance anxiety • Depression: Especially when linked to negative beliefs about self formed through difficult experiences • Addiction: Processing the traumatic experiences that often underlie substance use • Performance enhancement: Clearing blocks and building confidence for athletes, performers, executives Our EMDR therapists assess whether this modality is appropriate for your specific concerns and integrate it thoughtfully into your overall treatment plan.
The Eight Phases of EMDR
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase protocol: Phase 1 - History Taking: Understanding your history, identifying target memories, and creating a treatment plan. Phase 2 - Preparation: Learning about EMDR, building rapport, and developing resources for managing distress. Phase 3 - Assessment: Identifying the specific memory to target, including images, negative beliefs, emotions, and body sensations. Phase 4 - Desensitization: The core processing phase using bilateral stimulation to reduce the memory's emotional charge. Phase 5 - Installation: Strengthening positive beliefs to replace the negative beliefs associated with the memory. Phase 6 - Body Scan: Checking for and processing any remaining physical tension related to the memory. Phase 7 - Closure: Ensuring you're stable and calm before ending the session, with techniques for managing any lingering effects. Phase 8 - Reevaluation: At the next session, reviewing progress and determining next targets. This structured approach ensures thorough processing while maintaining your safety and stability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is EMDR safe?
Yes, EMDR is very safe when conducted by trained therapists. It's recognized by the World Health Organization and major mental health organizations as a first-line treatment for trauma. Our therapists are extensively trained and follow careful protocols to ensure your safety and comfort.
Will I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require extensive verbal recounting of traumatic events. You'll briefly identify the memory and associated elements, but you don't need to describe everything aloud. This makes EMDR more tolerable for many people.
How many EMDR sessions will I need?
It varies significantly. Single-incident trauma may resolve in 3-6 sessions. Complex trauma typically requires more extensive work. Our residential setting allows for intensive scheduling, often accomplishing in weeks what takes months in outpatient treatment.
What if I become overwhelmed during EMDR?
Your therapist is trained to pace the work appropriately and has techniques to help you stay within your 'window of tolerance.' EMDR includes built-in safety procedures. If you become too distressed, processing can be paused and you'll be guided to calm down before continuing.
Does EMDR work for everyone?
EMDR is effective for most people with trauma, but no therapy works for everyone. Some people may respond better to other approaches. Our comprehensive assessment identifies whether EMDR is appropriate for you, and we have alternative modalities if needed.
